Today, we had the enlightening experience of visiting a psychiatric ward at General Hospital Katsina alongside our passionate public health students. The visit provided a comprehensive overview of the essential services and support systems in place for individuals facing mental health challenges.

It started with an introduction to the hospital’s multidisciplinary team, which includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and occupational therapists. The collaborative approach they employ ensures holistic care for each patient.

The visit was headed by the Director Admin and Academic Planning (DAAP), Alh Isah Jidda H accompanied with some other members of the college.

Students and Staff learned about various programs aimed at reducing stigma, promoting early intervention, and educating the community about mental health.

One of the most impactful moments was visiting the inpatient unit, where we observed the compassionate care provided to patients in crisis. It was heartening to see the effort on creating a safe and supportive environment, aimed to each individual’s needs.

We also explored the outpatient services, where patients receive ongoing support through therapy, medication management, and group activities. These services play a crucial role in helping individuals reintegrate into their communities and maintain their well-being. The visit focuses on the importance of integrating mental health into public health strategies.

This experience was a powerful reminder of the vital role that mental health care plays in our overall well-being. It was inspiring to see the dedication of healthcare professionals and public health students working together to make a difference in the lives of those affected by mental illness.
